Dana Bay suburb is an “Urban Conservancy”, registered by Cape Nature on 27 May 1998. The residents live side-by-side with wild animals, where municipal green belts run through our area. Wild bushbuck, grysbokkies, porcupines, guinea fowls, buzzards, owls, and many other animals, co-exist with the locals. The suburb isn’t fenced in, which means animals can move freely around between green belts, houses, streets, estates, farmlands and ultimately to all areas i.e. Pinnacle Point, Boggomsbaai, etc. We furthermore are strictly cognisant of the need to maintain the biodiversity of the beaches and the ocean, as we are regularly visited by whales, dolphins, turtles, seals, penguins, and many bird species and pelagic birds on our shores.
Just a quick introduction to some very important aspects:
*Please regard the green belts as small National Parks. They are one of the most beautiful features of Dana Bay, and the home to all our natural fauna and flora.
*Property Boundaries need to be respected, with no encroaching into green belts. Any rehabilitation due to illegal encroachment will be for the account of the present owners.
*Please consider the natural vegetation on your stand before development. Please clear the area selectively to preserve endangered plants. Please contact the committee for assistance in removal of endangered plants & tortoises, if needed.
*Eradication of alien vegetation is a vital task. Please ensure no dumping of alien vegetation is done in our Green Belts {incl. Kikuyu grass}
*Keeping our beaches & streets free of waste and litter is essential to maintain the health and wellbeing of our area. Litter on beaches pose a threat to the wellness of sea life and natural biodiversity. It is unsightly! The picking up of dog excrement is a necessity on all street sidewalks and beaches.
*Our recommended speed is 40km/h. Our wild animals have right of way!
*Please keep an eye out for Buck and Tortoises on the roads. Please DO NOT remove them from the area.
*Be a responsible pet owner. Dogs are only to be walked on beaches and streets while on leashes and to be kept in an enclosed garden. Roaming dogs are a danger to wildlife and residents. All dogs to wear collars with name tags, with the contact details of the owner. Lately cats has become a problem as well. Please look at adding a bell to your cat’s collar which gives birds a fair chance to get away. Please monitor your cat more closely to see their habits.
* Please abide by the rules regarding walking of dogs on beaches, especially respecting the Oyster Catcher breeding area between 2nd Beach and Blinde River.
*Fireworks are prohibited by Municipal Law and present a huge fire risk. They wreak havoc with wildlife and pets.
*No Off-Road Vehicles are allowed on the beaches or in the green belt areas. No vehicles allowed in Green Belt areas.
*As a visitor, resident of Dana Bay and / or a member of our Conservancy, the future of our fauna and flora is regarded as your personal responsibility!
